PRSA-NY Board Member Spotlight: Sharon Fenster, President Elect

By David Graubard

Sharon Fenster

PRSA-NY gives special thanks to President-Elect Sharon Fenster for her passion to help others while keeping things fun. “
Sharon is known for her connectivity and her keen ability to create partnerships and networks that benefit the chapter and foster development of talent in the industry,” says fellow board member Helen Shelton, Vice President of Marketing. Last year, Sharon ran 26 events as Chair of the Chapter’s Programming Committee. Recently, she was in charge of partnerships for the signature event of the year, the Big Apple Awards Gala. PRSA-NY is fortunate to have Sharon Fenster, President-Elect, expanding her impact on the chapter each year.

Spotlight Q&A:

  1. Why did you feel it was important to join the board?

I started as a volunteer when Henry Feintuch, my mentor and past PRSA-NY Present, reached out to me to get more involved with the Chapter. Looking at his example, I clearly saw the benefits to service -- it would help me professionally, personally, and be a fun thing to do. When he invited me to join the board, it enabled me to join a cause that was very important to me and our industry, which is diversity and inclusion.

  2. Why did you decide to grow your commitment with the Chapter over time?

I feel it was a seamless transition from my role as VP Programming last year to becoming the 2017 President-Elect for PRSA-NY. It feels good to contribute to the industry and the people you’re working alongside. Also, it’s exciting to help the Chapter grow. As President in 2018, I will just make my efforts bigger. I have a lot of exciting ideas.

  3.  What does being a board member mean to you both professionally and personally?

Professionally, PRSA-NY has been a great source of networking. Getting to know smart people with similar values and integrity in business is a huge reward. In sum, I’ve made many excellent contacts and have advanced my business as well.

  4. In your view, how does PRSA/PRSA-NY differ from other industry associations?

I want to further the good work of my colleagues to distinguish the organization for its opportunities in self-development. We have major opportunities for members at all levels.

A top example is PRSA-NY’s programming strength. Our Meet the Media series allows members to network with the top media influencers. Further, members meet with like-minded industry professionals, which is very conducive for careers. It’s fun to learn new skills with others. I cannot leave out PRSA-NY’s signature event of the year, the Big Apple Awards Gala, which is focused on recognition in the communications field. It’s a feather in one’s cap to peers and to potential clients.

  5.  Would you be willing to share an example of a goal you or your team are reaching for?  Have you re-calibrated related goals from experience?

My personal goal for the board and members is that everyone is gets value from their participation. I will take a personal interest in working with everyone to make this a reality.

I haven’t changed my goals, I have just have made them bigger. Diversity and inclusion, membership and value are all very important to me. Also, I want to heighten the feeling of teamwork and togetherness in the board next year. The biggest thing is to have fun. I’m a strong proponent of fun –fasten your seat belts!
