How did you get into the PR industry?
I knew I was interested in public relations from the start, as a student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University and an active PRSSA member. My early career was in the agency world. I worked for DAY Public Relations which merged into Ogilvy & Mather Public Relations.
After spending 25+ years at PR agencies, mostly in management and leadership, I knew my next path would be consulting, training, and coaching for the agency world. Having been a consultant to my clients, having led training programs, and having both coached and been coached, I knew this was the right pivot for me. I launched my businesses in 2006, focusing on helping agencies grow their business, improve profitability, and enhance team performance, communications, and leadership skills.
I received my first formal certification in 2014 and executive coaching is my primary business. Nearly all of my clients have come from PR and communications agencies. My clients tell me that whether it's coaching, training, or consulting, they feel a comfort level with me because I know their worlds so well.
What is your favorite PR experience?
My favorite experience was launching the One and Only Wonderbra when I was at Marina Maher Communications. There was minimal advertising support, so we knew that the sell-outs were directly tied to our work, that our PR efforts had a major impact on sales success. On the personal side, earlier in my career, we helped kids from underserved communities swim for free at city parks and recreation pools during a tough economic time, thanks to our client Kool-Aid, during a tough economic time. The departments with whom we worked told us that they saw a huge bump in youth pool attendance thanks to our programs.
What do you love about PR?
Especially during this COVID-19 crisis, we have proved our impact for good – to help educate people, to provide a sense of community, and to share solace and knowledge. We are fortunate to be in this industry – it is a big responsibility and can be fulfilling. It makes me proud to have started my career in public relations and to keep serving it.
Why is PRSA-NY membership so valuable?
PRSA-NY keeps us informed on what is happening in the public relations world, and by sharing valuable knowledge, helps us be the best practitioners we can be, even during uncertain times. But most of all, for me PRSA-NY brings a very real community. I encourage PR and communications pros to not only join but to be active and serve the chapter and its membership.
