How did you get into the PR industry?
I chose PR because I had a class during my freshman year with Michelle Baum, who is the co-founder and CEO of Moxie + Mettle and a Colorado Chapter Board Member of the PRSA. She briefly mentioned that she ran a PR firm and what that was like, and I realized it would allow me to have a career with the qualities I was looking for—meeting new people, client-facing interactions, new tasks every day that would keep my days challenging and exciting...etc. It also just sounded fun, and Michelle is such a role model of mine.
What do you love about PR?
I love that PR is so much about relationships, people, and writing. It looks different across each industry but is built on the foundation of communication and relationships. I also find connections between PR and my own life; both have a rich history in storytelling, (mine through my mum's Arab/African culture), and both find importance in getting out of comfort zones and finding new and better ways to communicate.
What is your favorite PR experience?
My favorite PR story: My senior year, my team and I worked under the direction of a professor to create a PR strategy for a great Denver nonprofit, Metro Caring. We created a press kit, a flowchart for their stories (to help them decide whether stories should be shared on their blog, pitched to the press, or promoted on social media) and ran focus groups to help them narrow down their internal and external messaging to swivel from hunger relief to advocacy. It felt amazing to help this incredible organization with their mission so that they could keep doing what they did best supporting the Denver community.
Why is PRSA-NY Membership so valuable?
PRSA-NY is so important for staying connected because it offers resources for people at every stage in their career—whether it's to find a job, get advice, attend conferences and events with other PR pros or just to learn. I know that I have a community to reach out to through the highs and lows of my future career and I've been able to meet a lot of amazing people across the country because of PRSA as a student and now as a PR pro!
