How did you get your start in the PR industry?
I’ve worked in private, nonprofit, and quasi-public settings, deploying my writing, communications, and advocacy skills. I’m a natural in PR because it allows me to use all these skills. I feel like I’m a great advocate for clients’ products, services, and ideas. With the pandemic, I’m now volunteering as the media relations coordinator for the COVID-19 Action Coalition: Physician-Led Advocacy.
What is your favorite PR experience?
One of my first “gigs” was as a music publicist – getting press for harpists and flamenco guitarists from Spain performing at NYC’s major concert halls. I moved into public information, community-based advocacy, and public affairs/cause-related marketing, and then started consulting with many of the nation's top PR firms.
What do you love about PR?
PR has always served me well – providing me with so many terrific opportunities. In my almost two decades of working as a media relations consultant, I’m now an LLC – working with PR firms and my own clients. I’ve worked a ton in healthcare – a key area of expertise, cause-related PR with athletes, finance (nice after the crash!), and national advocacy. I love the diversity, the deadline pressure, and the chance to take complex ideas and distill them into a good story. I love talking to producers and reporters, building connections, being a great resource for them, and becoming a trusted colleague.
What value has a PRSA-NY membership brought to you?
PRSA-NY has been great for exposure to top media, for forming friendships and partnerships, and for the many opportunities to contribute. I've been a volunteer and member for many years.
