#MLKDay Is A Good Day for Community Service, Not A Day Off!

 by Mike Paul

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s Theory of Relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.” Quote excerpted from “The Drum Major Instinct,” a sermon by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968

Please honor the MLK Holiday and show respect to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. himself by finding a service project in your community today to give back to those greatest in need by serving yourself.

We cannot say we are brothers and sisters in America, if we do not serve together. We cannot say we honor and respect each other of different races, cultures, faiths and languages, if we never spend quantity and quality time together with those different than ourselves.

It saddens me how few know the impact and history of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His whole life work was about service, yet most of us, in business, government, nonprofit organizations and personally, don’t honor his holiday by seeking to serve.

Dr. King said: “In the end we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

Are you a friend to equality, justice, diversity, inclusion and freedom for all Americans? Then please honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s powerful legacy and reputation by getting up and participating in a community service project today. For example in NYC, New York Cares offers options on their website to get involved with community projects today.

Most simply know that Dr. King “had a dream.” But what was that dream about?  Do you even remember the full famous speech itself? Well, here is the full text of his famous I Have a Dream Speech for us all to read and reflect upon.
