Kellie Jelencovich, 15 Under 35 Associate Director and 2016 Winner
By David Graubard
"I feel very lucky to be part of such an esteemed group of professionals as PRSA/PRSA-NY. Personally, I have gotten to know and become dear friends with some amazing people and am so thankful for the guidance."
- What is the 15 Under 35 program and why are members excited about it?
The PRSA-NY 15 Under 35 program acknowledges and celebrates 15 of the foremost emerging leaders in communications in the New York metro area. Our members are excited about the awards as they stand apart in being the only of their kind honoring rising New York PR professionals, awarded exclusively by those best equipped to judge: New York PR professionals. This is also an award where there is no payment to apply.
Supervisors and mentors alike can nominate outstanding young pros. Outstanding young professionals are encouraged to self-nominate as well. What’s more, if you’re selected as a winner, you will be honored during an awards ceremony in November and will be given a seat on the PRSA-NY Young Professionals Advisory Committee, part of the PRSA-NY Board of Directors, from January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2018. The awards provide an opportunity to be active and contribute to the organization in an impactful and meaningful way.
- Why did you decide to grow your commitment with the chapter over time?
Throughout college, I was very involved in the PRSSA student organization and worked my way up from PR Director to President over the years, while attending the City College of New York (CCNY). Being active in the student organization and living in New York City, I was also able to attend many PRSA-NY events. At these events, I had the opportunity to network with industry professionals.
I remember attending the Career Forum, which was brought to life by Linda Krebs, when I was just a sophomore. Seeing her and other active board members really inspired me to strive for the best, and I knew from there I wanted to make a commitment to being active in the chapter upon graduation.
My mentors, Lynn Appelbaum and Art Stevens, are still very active in the New York Chapter of PRSA. It has been extremely rewarding to volunteer with them, all while giving back. They are part of an amazing group of members who put together first-class events for new professionals and create opportunities for seasoned PR executives to share their knowledge within the New York PR community, which is extremely valuable as a practicing PR executive.
- What does being a board member mean to you both professionally and personally?
Being a board member since 2015 has paved a way for me to make an impact and change outside of my everyday job. I have collaborated on various activities and currently serve as the Associate Director of the 15 Under 35 Awards. I am passionate about career development and mentoring so, as a board member, I have had the amazing opportunity to work alongside our industry’s most influential names, who are also passionate about giving back and creating meaningful change.
As a board member, I have also been able to see how a non-profit organization runs and have had a seat at the table, which has been extremely valuable.
- Has PRSA/PRSA-NY and its community boosted your profile?
Being involved in PRSA/PRSA-NY has provided me with various opportunities to get involved in the community and ultimately contributed to boosting my profile.
Most recently, in 2016, I received the prestigious 15 Under 35 PRSA-NY Award. A few years ago, I was also the recipient of the Art Stevens (past PRSA-NY President) CCNY/PRSA-NY Public Relations Scholarship and the CCNY LCU Foundation scholarship.
- What other volunteer roles have you taken on at the chapter?
I previously volunteered by serving on the Executive Committee as Secretary and on the nominating committee for the PRSA-NY 2017 and 2018 board slate. In 2015, I served as the Deputy Chair of programming. I have also served as the New Professionals Committee Co-Chair.
