• Heralding sweeping changes not seen in almost 30 years, revised FTC guidelines regarding endorsements and testimonials, with emphasis on consumer-generated media, such as blogs and social networking sites, went into effect on December 1.
• Pharmaceutical and medical companies took center stage at FDA hearings on online marketing in November, which some say may impact the way drug companies and PR firms communicate using Web-based techniques.
• A Forrester Research report issued in August stated that the number of people age 35 and older will become even more active on social networking sites, blogs and other online sites. The expanded use of technology has called greater attention to privacy challenges, which is the focus of public roundtables that the FTC will be holding to explore the issue.
With continuing evidence of a growing demand for online news and information, PR communicators have to be better informed about new regulatory developments before jumping into the social media pool. Join our panel of experts in media law, health care communications and digital/social media as we explore what this heightened government scrutiny may mean for PR practitioners, marketers and media strategists.
