Details: September 2014 has been designated by PRSA National as ethics month. Each local chapter is encouraged to develop an ethics program for its members during that month.

The New York Chapter of PRSA, spurred on by Emmanuel Tchividjian, the chapter Ethics Officer and a SVP at Ruder Finn, decided to organize a Mock Tribunal of the PR Profession. The idea was to provoke a conversation on PR and its critics with the hope that it would become clear to all attendees that ethical conduct in the practice of the profession was the best way to eliminate much of the criticism directed against public relations.

Each participant in the discussion was given a court role:

  • The Judge: Randy Cohen, the former “Ethicist” columnist for the New York Times
  • The Prosecutor: Paul Holmes of the Holmes Group
  • The Defense Counsel: Michael Schubert, Chief Innovation Officer at Ruder Finn
  • Two Witnesses for the Defense: Jacqueline Brevard, former chief and compliance officer at Merck & Co.; and Steve Cody, Co-Founder and CEO of the PR firm of Peppercomm
  • Two Witnesses for the ProsecutionDelbert Spurlock, former Associate Publisher of the NY Daily News; and Fran Hawthorne, author and journalist: regular contributor to the New York Times
  • The Foreman of the Jury: Doug Simon, President and CEO DS Simon Production
  • The Jury: The attendees

The discussion was lively, profound and entertaining.  The event, held on September 8, 2014 at the SUNY Global Center in midtown, was sold out with close to 100 attendees and now lives on as a free webcast-on-demand and free transcript.
